American Queen Steamboat — River Phantom
Memphis
Shipwreck / Maritime Moderate Activity
History & Paranormal Activity
The Mississippi River between Memphis and New Orleans has claimed hundreds of steamboats over two centuries of commercial traffic. The spirit of the steamboat Sultana — which exploded north of Memphis in 1865 killing over 1,800 Union prisoners in the deadliest maritime disaster in American history — is said to appear as a phantom light on the river on April 27, the anniversary of the explosion. River pilots and marina workers near the explosion site report a cluster of lights on the water that cannot be explained by any vessel traffic, and the sound of screaming that travels up from the river on still nights.
