Cumberland Gap — War Ridge

The Cumberland Gap was the principal gateway through the Appalachian Mountains for early American settlement and changed hands multiple times during the Civil War. The ridge overlooking the gap — occupied by Union and Confederate forces in succession — generates EVPs of military orders, cannon fire, and voices in period dialect on still nights. A column of soldiers in Civil War uniforms has been reported marching along the ridge trail by at least a dozen hikers in the past decade. The gap is also the site of Native American sacred sites that predate European contact.
