Deadman's Island — Munjoy Hill

Portland's East End waterfront is built over what was once Deadman's Island — a small tidal islet used as a burial ground for plague victims, pirates, and executed criminals through the colonial period. During construction and excavation projects over the decades, workers have repeatedly uncovered human remains, and the disturbances consistently trigger waves of reported paranormal activity in the surrounding neighborhood. Residents of the Munjoy Hill neighborhood report apparitions of colonial-era figures walking along the seawall at high tide.
