Gadsby's Tavern

Alexandria

Historic Site Moderate Activity

History & Paranormal Activity

Opened in 1770, this Alexandria landmark hosted George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, and was the social hub of the early republic. A mysterious woman who died in 1796 under unknown circumstances — referred to as the 'Female Stranger' — was buried in the nearby churchyard with her identity kept secret by her companion's oath. Her spirit is said to walk the tavern's second floor. Washington himself reportedly dined here the night before his death in 1799.
