History & Paranormal Activity
Opened in 1908 as an institution for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Pennhurst became the subject of a devastating 1968 TV exposé that documented conditions so horrific they shocked the nation into reform. Residents lived in squalor, were physically abused, and many died without proper medical care. The campus closed in 1987 and is now a Halloween attraction and paranormal destination — but the paranormal activity predates the commercial operations. Full-body apparitions, EVPs of people calling for help, and physical contact by unseen presences are reported throughout the Ward building.
