History & Paranormal Activity

Built circa 1738, Raynham Hall in Oyster Bay served as British headquarters during the Revolutionary War's Long Island occupation. The story that spy Robert Townsend overheard critical British plans here — leading to the uncovering of Benedict Arnold's treason — is accepted history. Townsend's sister Sally, who fell in love with a British officer who betrayed her, is the most frequently reported spirit: a young woman in 18th century dress seen near the parlor window. The officer himself appears in the upstairs bedroom where his portrait hangs, looking out with what witnesses describe as guilt.
