Sanilac Petroglyphs — Mystery Carvings

History & Paranormal Activity

The Sanilac Petroglyphs, carved into sandstone along the Cass River, are Michigan's only known ancient rock carvings — created by the Ojibwe people as spiritual communication with the manitou spirits. The carvings were revealed after a 1881 forest fire burned away the soil covering them and remain visible today in the state park. Indigenous elders describe the site as a doorway between worlds. Visitors report the feeling of being watched, spontaneous compass deviation, and in rare cases, hearing a low rhythmic drumming from beneath the stone when the site is quiet.
