South Manitou Island
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Leelanau County — Northwest Michigan
Haunted Island Extreme Activity
History & Paranormal Activity
Called Michigan's most haunted place by Thrillist. A cholera ship docked here and sailors buried the dead — and some still-alive victims — in a mass grave near the Old Cemetery. A ghost woman walks the beach carrying a lantern, waiting for a man who sailed away and never returned. In the official cemetery: a cross inscribed 'Human skeleton found on dunes 1933' — unknown identity, unknown fate. The South Manitou Lighthouse is haunted by keeper Aaron Sheridan, his wife Julia, and their infant son, all drowned in 1878. The wreck of the Francisco Morazan is haunted by a boy who drowned exploring it. Ghostly voices echo through the cedar woods.
