The Historic Anchorage Hotel
Anchorage
Haunted Building High Activity
History & Paranormal Activity
Alaska's oldest hotel (1916) is haunted by John Sturgus — a police officer who was shot and killed in the building in 1921. He appears in full uniform in the basement and has been photographed as an anomalous figure by guests unaware of the hotel's history. A woman on the second floor is seen in a rocking chair, and the old elevator operates independently on the floor where Sturgus died.

🔒 Classified Field Investigation Notes
The 1921 police report for Sturgus's death ruled it a line-of-duty shooting — but his service weapon was found unfired and holstered, a detail recorded in the report and then omitted from the official department death record.
