The Athens Lunatic Asylum (1874) is home to the most disturbing evidence of haunting in Ohio — the outline of patient Margaret Schilling, who disappeared in December 1978 and was found dead 42 days later in an abandoned ward. Her body left a permanent stain in the shape of a human form on the concrete floor that cannot be cleaned. Visitors report her presence throughout the building.
