Traverse City State Hospital (Northern Michigan Asylum)

Operated from 1885 to 1989, housing nearly 3,000 patients at its peak. Known for its 'beauty is therapy' philosophy — straitjackets were forbidden. The infamous 'Hippy Tree' is said to be a portal to Hell. Spirits in long white hospital gowns roam the halls, lights flicker with no power, and unexplained voices echo through the steam tunnels. Now The Village at Grand Traverse Commons, offering guided tours of unrenovated buildings and underground tunnels.
