Dog/wolf spirits said to protect the spirits of Chippewa warriors in the Omer Plains, about 5 miles from Lake Huron. The legend dates to at least the Civil War, rooted in old Chippewa tradition. European settlers blended their own werewolf/witchcraft beliefs with the existing Native American legends.
